How to decide which conference/s to go to?

When it comes to conferences, less is more. There are too many conferences to go to all of them, so we have to prioritise the ones most relevant to our work. Going to a conference takes and lot of time and energy away from your programmatic work, so each conference has an opportunity cost (not to mention the financial cost).

If you work in an organisation, your team should normally be able to help you pick the most relevant conferences. However, sometimes some proactivity on your part is necessary.

  • Ask your manager/colleagues: which conferences would be relevant to your work?
  • Ask around: which conferences have your colleagues have been to? Which ones did they find most valuable and why? Ask your community, especially people who are in the similar job. E.g. where do fellow fundraisers go? Or fellow operations professionals?
  • Think about your role priorities. Is it important for you to promote your programs, acquire new skills or simply learn about what’s going on in the movement? Choose a conference that will most likely help you achieve this.
  • If there are too many conferences for you to go to, consider delegating attendance to another team member and debriefing later.
  • Check out the latest conference recording talks and write-ups to see what type of content the conference usually has. 🔎Conference Knowledge Sharing
  • If you’re not sure, you can skip this year’s conference and let the feedback of other attendees decide if you attend next year.
  • Every conference has unique benefits. E.g. AVA Summit is a good all-rounder for animal advocates, EAG conferences are good for making connections in the effective altruism movement, Reducetarian is usually very good for alt protein folks and also fundraising because most funders attend it (the latter is not obvious from the conference’s description). We tried to capture this information as much as we can below, but it’s best to ask multiple people who have been to this conference.
  • Still unsure? Join us on Slack and ask a question in #help-requests.

How to make the best out of a conference?

Each conference is a big commitment on your resources so it’s important that you take full advantage of this opportunity. We recommend that you always take plenty of time to research the conference and prepare for it well.

Here are some write-ups on how to have a successful conference (these are specific-conference related, so you might need to tailor the advice to the specific conference).

Other FAQs

What shall I bring to a conference?
  • a mobile phone and a portable charger
  • comfortable shoes as you will be walking around and sometimes standing
  • snacks or energy drinks - you might get hungry in-between meals
  • a refillable water bottle
Do I need to bring business cards?

Nowadays very few people bring business cards to the movement conferences because their details are usually online on the conference app. Sometimes people would connect on LinkedIn or WhatsApp.

We recommend that you use a new type of business card: a QR code on your phone!

Here is how to create it for free.
What’s the dress code at these conferences?
  • Usually casual to business casual is appropriate. Make sure you check with the conference’s organisers to see if it’s the case. The more industry-facing the conference is (e.g. a climate conference or an animal agriculture conference), the more formal the dress code is likely to be. Also your role might require you to dress more formally (e.g. if you’re the head of your organisation and/or are giving a talk). Some people wear the t-shirts of the organisations they represent.
