AI and Animals Wiki

📝 Preface

Thank you for visiting Hive’s AI and Animal Advocacy Page. We believe AI interventions are a hugely tractable intervention for helping animals given the trajectory of AI improvement and the relative lack of lobbying groups against them.

It is easier to guide the system in development than change one once it is already in place.

Please click “edit” and add to this if you find other useful resources!

🏡 Join the Hive Community for the #ai channels to stay updated on the latest news and discussions on AI and animal advocacy.

  • #c-ai-discussion - to discuss new/existing AI projects and new capabilities of AI
  • #s -ai-tools - to learn how to incorporate AI into your existing workflow to do more in less time
  • #s-ai-images - share AI generated images and their prompts

General

IAA’s Link-in-Bio - IAA’s shortlist of favorite tools

You can also stay up to date on new tools at Product Hunt (filtered for AI)!

Tips
Bias Warning
  • Can be speciesist, racist, sexist, etc. Just a reflection of texts and images that were put on the internet and later used for training. Unclear if new internet based training data is being put in. We might have locked mostly into place via 2021.
  • This bias can be negated through fine tuning or specific prompting.
    • Ex.) Prompting - Middle eastern female cyborg surrounded by fish
    • Ex.) Fine tuning - up to the developer. models can be trained using other models, through RLHF, etc. Opportunity to re-educate the model. Downside is that it does get less powerful as we do this more.
Positive/Negative Reward Training AI

Reinforcement Learning by Human Feedback (RLHF)

  • If there is an appropriate answer/output, press 👍 and explain why
  • If there is an inappropriate (speciesist) answer/output, press 👎 and explain why
    • ex.) AI: here are some chicken recipes
      • 👎 this answer condones animal cruelty since 99% of chicken meat comes from broiler chickens in factory farm who are often sick, injured, and receive no veterinary care.

“I can’t claim that this is going to be a complete user guide, but it will serve as a bit of orientation to the current state of AI. I have been putting together a Getting Started Guide to AI for my students (and interested readers) every few months, and each time, it requires major modifications. The last couple of months have been particularly insane.

This guide is opinionated, based on my experience, and focused on how to pick the right tool to do things. I have written separately about the kinds of tasks you may want AI to do, which might be useful to read first.”

Productivity tools
Myreader.ai - upload books and chat with them
  • One liner questions only!
  • Searches for key words from questions —> finds relevant context from book
  • Can take large books > 300 pages
  • Can take pdf or epub
  • Based off ChatGPT3 (fast)
  • 3 months of pro free (COMMONSSF) - honestly the free version has been perfectly fine for me with the 800 page/20 query limit a day
  • Great founder dedicated to maintaining it!
  • Great for research (can cite relevant sections) and learning
  • Not great for prompting (large amounts of text)
Summarize with ChatGPT - free chrome extension. Custom prompts for the text on any webpage. Very useful for translating websites.
Read Aloud - easy to use text to speech generator
  • only available on chrome.
  • not buggy
  • can adjust the voice and the speed
  • will highlight sections as it speaks
  • Not great for PDF’s on page (have to upload separately) or text that is embedded in images
documentation

Read aloud the current web-page article with one click, using text to speech (TTS). Supports 40+ languages.

Read Aloud uses text-to-speech (TTS) technology to convert webpage text to audio. It works on a variety of websites, including news sites, blogs, fan fiction, publications, textbooks, school and class websites, and online university course materials. Read Aloud allows you to select from a variety of text-to-speech voices, including those provided natively by the browser, as well as by text-to-speech cloud service providers such as Google Wavenet, Amazon Polly, IBM Watson, and Microsoft. Some of the cloud-based voices may require additional in-app purchase to enable. Read Aloud can read PDF, Google Docs, Google Play books, Amazon Kindle, and EPUB (via the excellent EPUBReader extension from epubread.com). Read Aloud is intended for users who prefer to listen to content instead of reading, those with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and children learning to read. To use Read Aloud, navigate to the web page you want to read, then click the Read Aloud icon on the Chrome menu. In addition, the shortcut keys ALT-P, ALT-O, ALT-Comma, and ALT-Period can be used to Play/Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Forward. You may also select the text you want to read before activating the extension. Right clicking on the selected text will provide you with yet another option to activate Read Aloud via the context menu. To change the voice, reading speed, pitch, or enable text highlighting, go to the Options page either by right clicking on the Read Aloud icon and choose Options, or by clicking the Gear button on the extension popup (you'll need to stop playback to see the Gear button). Read Aloud is an open-source project. If you wish to contribute bug fixes or translations, please visit the GitHub page at https://github.com/ken107/read-aloud.
